Heidelberg Retinal Tomography (HRT)

The Heidelberg Retinal Tomograph ll (HRT) is new tomography technology used in the early detection and follow-up of glaucoma. The HRT is a laser ophthalmoscope that can precisely measure and analyze the shape of your optic nerve. It is a scanning laser, not a treatment laser, and is not harmful to the eye. Repeated measurements of the optic nerve with the HRT can often detect glaucoma damage earlier than visual field testing.

The test is painless and takes only minutes to complete. Usually, dilating drops are not required. You must look steadily at a small fixating light for approximately 10-15 seconds while the 3 dimensional photograph of your optic nerve is being taken. Each eye is measured separately. A computer compares the shape of your optic nerve to normal patient data and analyses changes in your optic nerve over time.

At present, the cost of this examination is not covered by OHIP. The examination fee of $80.00 for both eyes will be billed to you directly. A receipt will be provided that can be submitted to private insurance companies for possible reimbursement. You will need an examination every year. More frequent examinations may be recommended if your glaucoma is aggressive or progressing.

The Heidelberg Retinal Tomography ll is an excellent addition to our diagnostic tools in glaucoma management. It will be used in combination with intra-ocular pressure measurement, visual field testing, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and regular eye examination to better manage your glaucoma.
